he young internationally acclaimed Santoor maestro and music composer Abhay Rustum Sopori has been awarded the prestigious ‘Bharat Shiromani Award’ for the year 2008 – 09. The award was presented by the Governor of Orissa H.E. Sh. M.S Bhandare in a glittering function held at Hotel Le Meridian on 30th September night in New Delhi. Abhay became the youngest recipient ever to receive the prestigious Bharat Shiromani Award. The award is given in recognition of outstanding achievements and contribution made at international level to luminaries of Indian origin in different categories like Armed Forces, Arts & Culture, Business, Cinema, Education, Fashion, Information Technologies, Journalism, Judiciary, Medical, Politics, Public Sector, Science, Social Work, Sports, Industry, etc. The deserving personalities are chosen on the basis of their comparative merit, high caliber and commitment to national progress and human welfare.

The recipients of the 30th Bharat Shiromani Awards include Abhay Rustum Sopori (Santoor maestro & music composer), Jaya Prada (MP & Actress), Mohammad Azharuddin (MP & cricketer), H.E. Gen. J.J. Singh (Governor of Arunachal Pradesh), Dr. Justice AR Lakshmanan (Chairman, Law Commission of India), Abhinav Bindra (Olympic Gold medalist), Ashima & Leena Singh (Designer), Indira Jaisingh (Additional Attorney General), Major HPS Ahluwalia (Founder, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre), Dr. Fateh Singh Nabha, R Seetharaman (CEO, Doha Bank), Satnam Singh (CMD, Power Finance Corporation), Vincent M. Concessao (Archbishop Delhi), A.M. Naik (CMD, Larsen & Toubro), amongst others.

The award function was attended by various dignitaries including Pt. Bhajan Sopori and Prof. Aparna Sopori, Jagmohan Singh (Founder General Secretary, Shiromani Institute), Tarlochan Singh (Hon’ble MP), Dr. SK Pachauria (Chairman, Shiromani Institute), amongst others.

The Bharat Shiromani Award was founded in 1977. Some of the past recipients include Mother Teresa, HH Dalai Lama, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Pranab Mukherjee, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Sunil Dutt, Meira Kumar, Sheila Dikshit, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Vyjantimala Bali, Raj Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Leander Paes, Khushwant Singh, Prabhu Chawla, Mrinal Pande, Ritu Beri, Tarun Tahiliani, Shahnaz Hussain, and many others.

Abhay Rustum Sopori, the eminent Santoor maestro and music composer, has the credit for creating a Cultural Revolution in the Jammu and Kashmir State bringing the youth together through music. His efforts and initiatives have been path-breaking creating a new generation of music connoisseurs and bringing more recognition to the art and culture of the State at national and international level. He has not only established himself as one of the most prominent musicians of the present generation but simultaneously promoted numerous upcoming and talented musicians of the country. Abhay has carried forward the great legacy of his family in propagating and promoting the Indian culture globally. Grandson of the great music legend Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori who is hailed as the ‘Father of Music’ in J&K, and son of the great Santoor legend & composer Pandit Bhajan Sopori, Abhay has inherited a profound sense of music from his fabled Sufiana Gharana of Kashmir, the exclusive Santoor Gharana of the country. A recipient of various prestigious awards and honours including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award – Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, Ma Sharika Samman, Dogri Award, Sangeet Bhushan Award, Excellence Award, Young India Award, Juenjo Korean International Heritage Award, Kalawant Samman, etc. he has participated in various prestigious festivals across the world and has various notable albums to his credit.
